Come and join us this June at our Skills Extravaganza event in association with Cake Decoration and Sugarcraft Magazine, where you will learn an amazing array of skills perfect for continuing your sugarcraft journey, or getting you competition ready. From scratch baking to model making, cake covering to airbrushing to fancy lettering and everything in between! Taught by not 1 but 3 tutors, each an expert in their own specialist field, you’re sure to come away with an enhanced portfolio of skills ideal for the hobbyist baker or aspiring cake artist.
Throughout day 1 you will learn how to prepare mix and bake a cake from scratch, under the careful tuition of Elizabeth Harris. Followed by the opportunity to make your very own buttercream using a Kitchen Aid Artisan Mixer, before discovering how to properly layer, coat, and cover your sponges. Later in the day you will then be taught by the talented Emma Chamberlain, Renshaw Academy’s resident tutor, how to perfect your model making skills through handcrafting a cute seated fairy character, using a variety of the Renshaw Modelling Pastes. Discovering how to create facial features and expressions as well as learning the crucial aspects of proportion. Emma will also guide you through the use of basic structure for small models*.
As day 1 draws to a close, Dawn Butler from Dinky Doodle Design will give a short talk on her experiences of entering shows and competitions, covering areas such as transporting your cake, setting up, interpreting the rules, and how to avoid fundamental costly mistakes or disqualifications. This will be an interactive Q&A session, so come prepared with any burning questions you may have.
Your second and final day will be taught by Dawn Butler, beginning with perfecting your covering and cake coating skills using Renshaw Extra on both a real sponge and dummy cake base, giving you an understanding of the different techniques used for each decorating style. Dawn will then assist you in creating an ombre airbrushed design using Rainbow Dust Liquid Colours along with a selection of Katy Sue Moulds to add those all important finishing touches!
Throughout both days all students will be provided with a plentiful supply of refreshments, as well as buffet styled lunch and afternoon tea. During your final day you will have the opportunity to shop the products used throughout the sessions and benefit from exclusive discounts in our pop up Academy shop, including items from brands such as Renshaw, Rainbow Dust and Dinky Doodle Design**
